Sara Burke, co-chair of the Saint Louis Visionary Awards, shared her thoughts about this year’s honorees with Gazelle.

“Susan Barrett’s gallery, Barrett Barrera Projects, is so committed to cutting-edge art. She really put St. Louis on the map and does so by being extremely inclusive. Brea McAnally is just amazing—she co-founded (with her husband) The Luminary on Cherokee Street when she was only 20 years old…this is The Luminary’s 10th anniversary. Carmen is a force, she has devoted her life to teaching, and her cultural dance company, Grupo Atlantico, is renowned. Jacqueline and Kari are both two of our finest actors—ever. And Kathie Winter is wonderful. She especially champions smaller arts groups such as The Big Muddy Dance Company, in addition to all her support for our larger institutions. I can go on and on…,” Burke said.

The awards program on Monday, April 22, begins at 6 p.m., to be followed by a reception at 7 p.m. For tickets and more information, visit vizawards.org.

Fall forward: Did you know that St. Louis is hosting The Great North American Oktoberfest this year? The three-day festival near Soldier’s Memorial downtown, from Oct. 4 to Oct. 6, promises to bring the Munich Oktoberfest experience to this side of the pond, with the best of German food, beer and culture, as well as plenty of family-friendly activities. Organizers from the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit North American Society of German Culture and Heritage say St. Louis’ deeply rooted German history and central Midwest location made it a perfect choice for the festival, which is expected to draw tens of thousands of people over the weekend.
