Parisian Hot Chocolate (as featured on The Stir)

The Binge Besties, who got together to create the SIP (Shelter in Place) Series for The Stir Podcast, have been doing their best to keep you entertained since the early days of the pandemic this spring.

As we inch closer to Thanksgiving, we know that for many families, the traditional get-together will look and feel differently this year—which might not be a bad thing for some of us.

And this is the premise of this week’s list of recommended movies: Films about Dysfunctional Families.

The Stir Podcast host Trish Muyco-Tobin (right) and guest co-host Debbie Baldwin air their grievances against the most dysfunctional families of the silver screen.

From the most acclaimed divorce film of all time to a voyeuristic look behind the scenes of a glamorous star’s relationship with her children, these movies mirror the range of dysfunction that can be found in families of all sizes, no matter their class, race, or which part of the world they call home.

So don’t feel bad if your family is not “perfect.” As you’ll discover in these movies, striving for perfection – at the expense of your loved ones and your relationships – may be part of the problem to begin with.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 6 ounces top-quality dark or bittersweet chocolate, chopped finely
  • 1 to 2 T brown sugar, optional and according to taste
  • Tiny pinch of sea salt
  • Whipped cream for serving, optional

Directions

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk until it’s hot and bubbles appear. Add salt and the finely chopped dark chocolate and whisk until dissolved and smooth.
  2. Bring the hot chocolate to a very low simmer, whisking continuously; simmer for about 3 minutes to thicken. Stir in the brown sugar, if desired, and whisk until smooth.
  3. Pour into cups and serve with a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.

Note: For an even thicker drink, make the hot chocolate ahead of time, let it cool and refrigerate. Reheat in saucepan when ready to serve.
