St. Louis-based Companion Baking is joining forces with a number of area grocery stores in an effort to feed hundreds of thousands of local schoolchildren amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
From now until the end of June, 50 cents of every Companion Sprouted Wheat Sandwich Bread sold at Schnucks, Straub’s and Fresh Thyme will go toward providing meals to hungry children in St. Louis as part of the national No Kid Hungry campaign.
The goal is to sell 50,000 loaves over the course of the 2020-2021 school year, raising $25,000 to provide up to 250,000 meals locally.
Traditionally, many children rely on the meals they receive at school during the week. But with the coronavirus pandemic leaving many school buildings still closed or only partially open, children are missing the meals they need. The No Kid Hungry campaign, overseen by the national nonprofit, Share Our Strength, uses a combination of emergency grants, strategic assistance, advocacy and awareness to address childhood hunger in communities across the country.
“Selling the new Companion Sprouted Wheat Sandwich Bread will help ensure our local kids get the food they need during this crisis and beyond,” said Josh Allen, founder of Companion Baking and a team member of the STL Chefs Cycle for No Kid Hungry team.
Companion’s Sprouted Wheat Sandwich Bread can be purchased for $4.99 at most Schnucks locations in the St. Louis area. In addition, the bread is available at local Straub’s and Fresh Thyme stores.
