Three more luminaries will be inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame beginning next week.
Renowned St. Louis sculptor Harry Weber will get his star during a public ceremony on Wednesday, June 21, on the Delmar Loop.
Born in St. Louis in 1942, Weber graduated from Princeton University and served in the U.S Navy for six years, including a year as a river patrol boat commander in Vietnam.
Weber’s sculptures of legendary sports figures are at stadiums across the country, such as at the Cardinals Plaza of Champions series at Busch Stadium featuring Cool Papa Bell, Lou Brock, Dizzy Dean, Bob Gibson, Rogers Hornsby, Stan Musial, Red Schoendienst, George Sisler, Enos Slaughter and Ozzie Smith. His work can also be found at cultural and historical landmarks, including the Dred and Harriet Scott monument at the Old Courthouse, the Chuck Berry statue on the Delmar Loop and the new Denny Reagan statue at The Muny.
The following Monday, June 26, world heavyweight boxing champions Michael and Leon Spinks will be inducted into the Walk of Fame.
The St. Louis-born boxers made history in 1976 as the first brothers to win Olympic gold medals in the same year. As pros, both would later win the World Heavyweight Championship: Leon became the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world in 1978, defeating Muhammad Ali in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history; Michael, with his so-called “Spinks Jinx,” won the crown in 1985.
Both ceremonies begin at 11 a.m., with live music from a ragtime band, followed by the induction at 11:30 a.m. Weber’s June 21st induction takes place in front of Peacock Diner at 6261 Delmar Blvd. The Spinks brothers’ induction ceremony on June 26 will be held at 6217 Delmar Blvd. in the Delmar Loop.
Weber will be accepting his award in person. Michael Spinks will be on hand for the Spinks ceremony and accept the award on his and his brother’s behalf. Leon Spinks died at the age of 67 in 2021.
This month’s new inductees will join other notable St. Louisans on the Walk of Fame, including Scott Joplin, John Goodman, Maya Angelou, Tina Turner and Bravo late-night host Andy Cohen, who was inducted last month.
