WEDDING DATE: September 2, 2018
CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Noboleis Vineyards in Augusta, Missouri
ABOUT THE COUPLE: He is in banking. She works at an advertising technology startup as a product manager. The couple lives in Chicago.
HOW DID YOU MEET? We met during a game night hosted by mutual friends. Grace was new to the city and was hoping to find a group of friends to connect with. The host that evening was Adam’s best friend (eventually his best man), along with his future wife (who served as Grace’s bridesmaid). Once we were introduced, we hit it off right away.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE? It was a lazy Saturday afternoon. I was napping when Adam came home from work. He tiptoed around, decorating the balcony that was attached to our bedroom with roses. Once he was done, he knocked on the door, and I got up to let him in. He knelt down on one knee and popped the question. After my jubilant “Yes!” we opened Champagne and sat on the balcony amidst the roses and soaked up our joy. Afterwards, we got dressed up and went to a fancy Chicago steakhouse to celebrate, just the two of us. But when we walked in, there was a surprise party with all of our immediate family and closest friends (many of whom flew in from out of state). It was a huge surprise and made the day all the more special.
WHAT WAS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR WEDDING? There are two that come to mind: Grace’s older brother, who lives nearby in Chicago and has a very close relationship with both of us, officiated the wedding. The whole ceremony felt so personal and authentic. The second is that we decided not to do a wedding cake. Instead, we did wedding pies, with seven different flavors and gluten-free options! It felt like the perfect dessert for a hot Missouri summer night.
FAVORITE MOMENT ON YOUR WEDDING DAY?
Grace: We wanted our wedding to be blend between our two families and histories. Adam is Jewish, so was important to us that we incorporate some of the more meaningful Jewish traditions throughout the weekend. My family has lived in Lake St. Louis for almost 50 years, and my parents got married at the family home there. We weren’t able to have our wedding at the lake, so we decided to perform one of the significant Jewish rituals there instead. We ended up singing our ketubah under the gazebo where my parents were married 39 years before (almost to the day). It was really special to bring both traditions together in a single moment, surrounded by our families and closest friends.
WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THIS PERSON WAS THE ONE?
Adam: It was at our first Cubs game that I realized I was going to marry her. The rain started as soon as the game was underway and for the first time, I didn’t care. Grace clearly wanted to leave and I happily obliged—something I’d only do for “the one.”
