Cleaning makeup brushes is a process that we all dread. But one of the best ways to help stay away from breakouts is to keep those beauty brushes clean.

It feels like a chore, but it’s essential to your beauty routine. Beauty professionals recommend that you wash your brushes every one to two weeks. The time frame can vary, depending on how often you use your brushes. Many people use liquid, rather than powder foundation, and these brushes need special attention because wet, dark places are the perfect breeding ground for nasty bacteria.
The formula is pretty simple: Use water, a good cleanser (try Sephora Collection’s Citrus Brush Cleaner) and your fingers or a brush cleansing palette. You can also use a gentle shampoo and hair conditioner to wash and condition your brushes.
Daily cleansing is highly recommended, as well. This process is quick and simple. Simply give your brushes a couple of sprays with a makeup brush cleanser. This will work as a brush sanitizer, instantly killing harmful germs.

Gently place your brushes on a clean towel to allow them to dry. If you have a drying rack, be sure to hang them upside down to maintain the glue that holds the brush and the bristles together.
Always store them in a closed container (after they are thoroughly dry), such as a makeup bag or organizer. This will protect them from any dirt and debris that could stick to the bristles and end up in your pores.
