Safe Connections, an organization recognized for its work to prevent and end domestic and sexual violence and for helping survivors thrive, is expanding its Crisis Textline to 24 hours.
The organization’s Crisis Textline is a resource for people going through a crisis, as well as for survivors of domestic and sexual violence and for those who support them.
“Our No. 1 priority in assisting those who reach out via the Crisis Textline is ensuring they are safe,” said Cynthia Danley, CEO of Safe Connections. “We can and will provide the same level of support via text as we do via the Crisis Helpline. Our initial question is always ‘Are you safe currently?’”
The Crisis Textline is the same number as the 24-hour Crisis Helpline, (314) 531-2003. The organization uses a HIPPA-compliant web-based platform which appears as a regular text format for those who use it.
Trained crisis-advocate professionals staff the Crisis Textline to provide greater access to those who feel safer and more comfortable with texting, as well as for non-English speakers, English language learners and the deaf community.
“Texting is the preferred way our youth communicate. Also, when a survivor doesn’t have the privacy to make a phone call to our Crisis Helpline, they may be able to send a quick text,” Danley noted. “In both instances, we wanted to ensure they could get the help they needed.”
Danley adds the organization has seen in increase in texts from young people. As a result, Safe Connections is working to expand outreach and awareness, now that the textline support is 24/7.
Danley assures that clients who used the textline will receive the same high-quality level of service and support consistent with the telephone helpline form compassionate and committed professionals. Advocates are equipped to offer emotional support, safety planning, and referrals for counseling, medical care, legal aid and more. The textline and telephone helpline are available for adults and young people of all genders. The services are also a recommended resource for friends and family members who are concerned for a loved one.
The Safe Connections Crisis Textline is (314) 531-2003. The Crisis Helpline number is the same.
Safe Connections’ biggest fundraiser of the year is the upcoming Lotus Ball on Friday, Nov 4. Proceeds benefit the organization’s award-winning programs to help reduce the impact and incidence of relationship violence and sexual assault through education, crisis intervention, counseling and support services.
