There’s no excuse to sit out National Ice Cream Day, the one day of the year when we can all scream for ice cream!
The unofficial holiday to celebrate all things cool, creamy and scoop-friendly takes place this Sunday, July 16, at a number of St. Louis-area establishments. From sorbets to sundaes to frozen custard, there are plenty of choices to please your palate with everyone’s favorite sweet treat.
The award-winning custard stand’s seven St. Louis-area locations are now serving Andy’s seasonal mid-summer offerings, including the refreshing Key Lime Pie Concrete that’s packed with a whole slice of sweet-tart pie swirled into creamy custard! Plus, get a taste of summer with a trio of peachy delights: Peach Concrete made with fresh fruit, Peach Dream Concrete with fresh fruit, malt and crème caramel, and Peach Sundae piled high with frozen custard and … you guessed it, lots and lots of peaches.
Andy’s Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip is also available as a specialty quart to-go. The hard-to-resist combo features black raspberry blended with vanilla frozen custard and chocolate chips – oh my!
All eight St. Louis-area locations will kick off the party at noon, when the first person in line at each shop will receive a free, limited-edition National Ice Cream Day poster by artist Carlos Zamora. Plus, the first 50 people in line at each store will receive a Clementine’s Creamery National Ice Cream Day t-shirt. Throughout the day, there will be photo ops, giveaways and, of course, ice cream!
The new Clementine Sorbet is packed with the citrusy goodness of the brand’s namesake fruit. But wait, there’s more: The seasonal lineup of flavors includes American Pie, Roasted Pineapple Sorbet, Peachy Heat Cheesecake, Watermelon, the “naughty” Super Nova Martini and Lioness, a delightful tropical treat made with passion fruit, calamansi and raspberries topped with a “crown” of Lion’s Mane granola.
The landmark establishment in Midtown St. Louis is serving up all its signature creations from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., including the Smores Sundae (vanilla and chocolate ice cream, roasted marshmallows, hot fudge and crumbled graham crackers topped with whipped cream), the Bearcat (vanilla and butter pecan ice cream with hot fudge, caramel, bananas and whipped cream), and the World’s Smallest Ice Cream Cone.
There will also be a secret-menu Ice Cream Martini just for the occasion, as well as random giveaways and an all-new line of merch and collectibles for purchase.
There will be some extra celebrating at Ices Plain & Fancy this weekend. The Shaw neighborhood sweet spot known for its flash-churned nitro ice cream is marking its ninth anniversary on the same day, so prepare to have fun with face-painting and balloon animals (noon to 2 p.m.), and a D.J. (noon to 4 p.m.)
Ices has a seasonal Blueberry Nutella that’s oh-so-yummy; other faves include Peanut Butter Chocolate and the boozy Cherry Not So Cordial and Ancho & Lefty.
SERENDIPITY HOMEMADE ICE CREAM
At Serendipity in The Grove, owner Beckie Jacobs and her crew will be celebrating a milestone anniversary: 20 years of making some of the finest ice cream in St. Louis.
Beginning at noon, enjoy hourly specials, enamel pin and koozie giveaways, balloon twister (4 to 6 p.m.) and live music (4 to 6 p.m.). Choose from 28 flavors, among them, Gold Coast Chocolate, Cappuccino Chip and Cookie Monster. Or, you could get fancy with a “spirited shake” like the Brown Squirrel, a Dipity Dough ice-cream sandwich or the over-the-top Waffle Nachos.
In downtown Kirkwood, Pioneer Bakery Café’s The Scoop has a BOGO National Ice Cream Day special: Buy one scoop, get the second scoop free.
The hardest part? Trying to decide which scoop from the array of fun flavors, like Birthday Cake, Bubblegum and Superman. Wanting something a little extra? Make your own ice-cream cookie with a flavor and topping of your choice.
