Golf the Galleries Returns to The Sheldon

For the third year in a row, “Golf the Galleries,” a series of interactive, artist-designed mini-golf installations, will be on display at the Sheldon Art Galleries. The playable, nine-hole exhibition presents the work of St. Louis-area artists, architects and other creatives, and will run from Friday, July 3, through Sunday, Sept. 6.

Timed tickets, as well as other safety practices, will be in place following COVID-19 recommendations and guidelines set forth by the CDC and the City of St. Louis.

Every year, the exhibit showcases original work by artists, who each design a unique hole along a nine-hole course. This year’s course begins with a Rube Goldberg-style hole, “Sze’s Route,” created by sculptor Jacob Stanley, who incorporates everyday and industrial objects like milk crates, wooden chairs, clamp lights and ladders on the way to the hole.

The World Chess Hall of Fame’s “Opening Theory” hole draws inspiration from the game’s more than 1,500 years of history, as well as its origins in India.

Also featured is artist Justin King’s whimsical recycled-cardboard creations in “Fauna Chroma,” a 3-D display of elephants, rhinos and gazelles on a zebra-print rug playing surface. In “Get a Clue!,” inspired by the classic board game, Clue, designer Natalie Pinson sets up a fun-filled who-done-it with a “golf-sized” billiard table, a lush, plant-filled conservatory and a black-and-white tiled ballroom. In “Zip It,” fashion designer Ameli Blaser pays homage to the zipper installation on Washington Avenue by creating a life-sized zipper made with Astroturf, sheet metal and 3-D printing.

Timed tickets will be sold in advance starting Monday, June 22 at 10 a.m. through MetroTix or at TheSheldon.org. Same-day tickets may be available for purchase at the door, based on capacity and advanced sales.

Hole 9, ““Louis Vuittaco,” as conceived by artist Martha Valenta and built by scenic carpenter Brian Macke, reimagines the humble taco as a luxury item, paring it with the logo of legendary design house Louis Vuitton.

“Golf the Galleries” will be open Monday through Friday, noon to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Some safety guidelines for visitors and staff include:

  • Visitor capacity will be limited to 8 golfers per 15-minute time slot.
  • Visitors will be asked to remain in their cars, or outside, until their appointed ticket time.
  • All in-person tickets and bar sales will be limited to credit card payments only.
  • All staff and visitors age 9 and older will be required to wear masks; masks for visitors between the ages of 2 and 8 will be encouraged. Masks will be provided for those who do not have one.
  • All visitors will pass through a free-standing temperature scanner and will be asked to sign in with the names of everyone in their party for contract-tracing purposes.
  • Used golf clubs and balls will be collected in a covered receptacle and sanitized by staff after each use.
