One of the highlights of CAM’s fall exhibitions is Stephanie Syjuco’s “Rogue States,” an exhibit that features new and recent works by the conceptual mixed-media artist. Syjuco, who was born in the Philippines and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, uses installation, photography, sculpture and textile to explore the complexities of politically charged issues such as citizenship, immigration and nationality.

During her two-week residency in St. Louis this summer, Syjuco researched local archives for information relating to the 1904 World’s Fair, particularly records of the exposition’s Filipino Village, one of the notorious “living exhibits” open to fairgoers. Informed by her local investigations, the artist has created a multifaceted site-specific installation that goes beyond the focus of her research to explore the power of photography and the medium’s remarkable ability to capture a moment in time that may create long-lasting historical, political and social narratives.
