This Summer’s Hottest Protective Styles for Hair

Protective styles have been used for years by women of color to shield their, kinks, curls  and coils from hair enemies such as the sun, dry air, manipulation and breakage. Many claim protective styles – braids, twists, dreadlocks, weaves and more – are key to healthy hair growth. Here are some of my favorites this summer:

Bantu Knots

Bantu knots are quirky and fun. They were extremely popular in the ’90s and made a major comeback in the late 2000s. Wear them as-is for an edgy effect, or wrap them overnight and take them down in the morning for some heat-free bombshell curls.

Box Braids

I have to say that this is the most versatile hairstyle on the list. You can get them short, long, big, small, in colors, and style them as you please. The possibilities are endless! They are very time-consuming, but I promise it is well worth the wait.

Feed-in cornrows

This hairstyle has a very natural look and feel. The reason being, skilled braiders know how to make the knots undetectable by using a method called feeding-in.  Just jump in the pool and stop stressing about what your hair looks like, because this style will hold its own.

Crochet

This method of styling uses a crochet needle to secure sections of hair into cornrows. If done correctly, the hair will appear as if it’s growing straight from your scalp. Half up-half downs, buns, and many more are possible with this styling method.

Faux Locs

Dreadlocks have a rich history attached to them. However, they are a permanent hairstyle that requires locking the natural hair. With the faux locs method, you can do it for the culture, and take them out whenever you are itching to switch it up. Why not?

Head wraps

Don’t feel like doing your hair today? No problem. Utilize head wraps to look effortlessly stylish. Different prints, colors and patterns are available with head wraps. Many different head-wrapping methods exist to suit your style.

Wigs

Wigs have always been popular and over the years have become more natural. Talented hairstylists use lace or silk frontals and full lace wigs to mimic the look of a natural hairline. Many women experiment with different cuts, colors, and styles  – and I just love it!
