Pie aficionados, rejoice! For the first time in years, Sugarfire Pie is bringing back two indulgent, show-stopping desserts, thanks to national recognition from the Cooking Channel.
For a limited time next month, Sugarfire pastry chef Carolyn Downs will be making her signature Gooey Butter Stack Pie and Chocolate Cherry “Pake,” a pie-within-a-cake dessert.
Both sweet treats recently garnered national attention from “Cheat Day USA” and host Robert Irvine. The Cooking Channel show, which highlights “the craziest, most indulgent, most deliciously decadent meals to tuck into between gym days,” featured Downs and Sugarfire Pie in its “Sinful Slices” episode (Season 1, Episode 9), currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and YouTube and rebroadcast on Cooking Channel. Chef Irvine gushed over the desserts, calling them “sinful.”
The Gooey Butter Stack Pie and Chocolate Cherry “Pake” will be available at Sugarfire Pie in Olivette beginning next month, but inventory will be limited, with only one of each dessert made daily (Tuesday through Saturday starting Jan. 4).
Downs, who has more than 30 years of experience as pastry chef, began by selling her homemade pies to local restaurants. In 2003, she and husband Charles Downs and chef Mike Johnson brought back historic Cyrano’s Café in its current location in Webster Groves. In 2012, the team opened Sugarfire Smoke House with Downs’ pies and other desserts sold as featured treats.
The popularity of Downs’ desserts eventually gave birth in 2014 to Sugarfire Pie, which offers seasonal pies, cookies and Ronnie’s Ice Cream frozen treats. The pie shop is next door to Sugarfire Smoke House at 9200 Olive Blvd. in Olivette.
