The Resale Shop in Creve Coeur is a favorite destination for women who are looking for that special designer item without paying the luxury store price. It’s a treasure trove for those who regularly attend parties and galas, but want to be savvy about spending.

Director of retail operations, Jessica Duneman, who celebrates her 10th anniversary at National Council of Jewish Women St. Louis, shares tips on how to shop resale, and gives the scoop on the store’s biggest fundraiser, Couturier. Also check out the hot items in the above video.

What is the most gratifying aspect of your work?

I have always been interested in retail and have spent my entire career – so far – in some form of it. While it is great to enjoy what you do each day, the greatness reaches an entire new level when what you love to do also helps those around you. The money raised by The Resale Shop through Couturier and every day business funds our local programs and projects enriching the community in which we all live.

How did the idea of Couturier come up?

Couturier began in 1964, in the vacant living room of a member’s new home. It was the idea of Bede Wolff, who lent a dress to a friend and realized that many women would probably enjoy the chance to buy nice items from one another to help NCJWSTL. The first sale brought in 16 people and raised $125, but has since took on a life of its own. Over 50-plus years now, the Couturier sale has raised millions of dollars for NCJWSTL’s many programs and projects.

How do you decide which items end up in the event?

The donation center staff sorts hundreds of donated items every day, from casual wear to designer gowns. Designer items are processed separately, and while most items are immediately tagged and labeled to fill the sales floor, a select few items that we call the “Best of the Best,” are put aside for our Couturier event. Just think, each item at our Couturier event has been hand selected to ensure every item available is a true resale treasure!

What has been the hottest item you’ve found in this year’s donations?

By far, the best item donated this year has been a “like new,” crocodile Balenciaga handbag, in the most beautiful shade of purple you have ever seen. We are featuring it on our online Couturier auction, beginning Oct. 22, where you can log on and place a bid!

What do you say to women who want to shop resale, but are afraid of being judged?

Resale shopping is hot now, and I do not see that changing anytime soon. Whether you shop resale online or in person, there are so many benefits to not only your wallet, but the environment, as well. When choosing to shop resale, especially at a charity shop, you are also choosing to support the community in which you live. There is no reason to be ashamed of being mindful of your community and the planet, or for saving a few dollars.

When are the best days to come to the store?

Every day is a great day to shop at The Resale Shop. New items hit the sales floor daily, making it a new place to shop each and every day. Because we rely on donations from the community for our inventory, no two days are ever the same. You just never know what is going to show up at the donation center door that day. We also offer several daily sales a week, which we advertise on our social media pages each morning, only adding to the perks of shopping with us.

What three savvy things should women be aware of when shopping for designer items?

When buying second-hand, fakes are always a concern. Make educated purchases and know when a deal is too good to be true. Support your local shops and get to know the staff. We love helping our customers find that special piece they have been searching for or surprising them with that piece that came in that they didn’t even know they needed. Lastly, have fun. Fashion is fun, and shopping resale is an adventure. Your closet will come to life with one-of-a-kind, second-hand pieces versus new run-of-the-mill items.
