A St. Louis-area teacher is the new Jeopardy! champion.
Emily Fiasco, an assistant band director at Buerkle and Washington middle schools in the Mehville School District in South County, prevailed at the conclusion of the Final Jeopardy round in an episode that aired locally on Wednesday, July 13.
Fiasco defeated returning champion Steve Clarke under the category, “State Mottos.” A third contestant, who had a negative score at the end of Double Jeopardy, did not advance to the final round.
Host Mayim Bialik presented the contestants with the following final Jeopardy answer: This motto is the name of a city in that state and is a famous quote by an ancient Greek from the 3rd century B.C.
Fiasco responded with “What is Eureka?” besting Clarke, who gave an incorrect response with “Corpus Christi.” Eureka, in this case, refers to the city in northern California. Interestingly enough, Eureka is also the name of a St. Louis-area suburb.
Fiasco doubled her winnings from Double Jeopardy in the final round for a total of $28,000. She returns to defend her title on Thursday, July 14. Jeopardy! airs at 4:30 p.m. on KSDK Channel 5.
