The St. Louis riverfront is getting greener. The Katherine Ward Burg Garden will officially open to the public Sunday, April 23, with an afternoon celebration featuring live music, a photo booth and dessert.
The garden is another step in the long-term plan to redevelop the riverfront. It features a trellis sloping paths, seating wall, swings and a variety of native plants. The area is suitable for picnics, gathering with friends, and as a venue for events and programs.
Located at 612 N. First St. on the Mississippi Greenway at Laclede’s Landing, the Katherine Ward Burg Garden is the second of eight Great Rivers Greenway spaces opening this year. The first, the “Pillars of the Valley” monument at CITYPARK soccer stadium, was unveiled in February.
Other openings to come include Deer Creek Greenway in Brentwood, a walking and hiking bridge on the Meramec Greenway at I-44, extensions to the Centennial Greenway in St. Charles and Olivette, and extensions to the St. Vincent Greenway in North St. Louis County.
The grand opening on April 23 is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting and presentation at 2:15 p.m.
