If you’re looking for some new entertainment, author and KTVI, Fox 2 news anchor John W. Brown has released a new book that might be just what you need. And you might learn a thing or two.
“Missouri: An Illustrated Timeline,” from St. Louis-based Reedy Press, tells entertaining stories and secret histories of the state of Missouri, complete with photographs and illustrations.
Parents who are home schooling during the current stay-at-home orders might even use the new book as a way to introduce state history and culture.
Representing Missouri’s 200-year history in a way that is both educational and entertaining, “Missouri: An Illustrated Timeline” offers a look back, as well as a look ahead to a fabulous future situated perfectly in the middle of the country. As a state, Missouri is a blend of everything America has to offer and the site of many of the nation’s historic events and life-changing inventions.
The book’s timeline highlights the important moments in Missouri’s history that have defined the state and notes the parallels in its trajectory. Not long after the first skyscraper was built in Missouri, Laura Ingalls Wilder moved to southern Missouri, where she wrote about life on the prairie. At the same time the Lake of the Ozarks was filling up, Prohibition was ending, Bonnie and Clyde were having shootouts, and a golfer from Springfield was winning the first Masters Tournament. This book allows readers to see Missouri’s defining moments and provides a new understanding of how it all lines up historically.
