A few St. Louis-area restaurants are featuring menu specials for the Lenten season, from on-the-go sandwiches to fine-dining entrees.
Every Friday during Lent, all locations of St. Louis-based Lion’s Choice will have their fryer fired up with the Crispy Cod Sandwich, served on a toasted sesame-seed bun with a slice of melted Swiss cheese and tartar sauce. Each sandwich is $5.99, or $9.69 as a meal with fries and a drink.
Fish sandwiches are also back at Winslow’s Table. The eatery’s seasonal fried fish sandwich is now available for lunch and dinner. On select Fridays, the popular fish tacos from sister restaurant Taqueria Morita will also make an appearance on Winslow’s dinner menu.
At Mission Taco Joint, a new fish taco is on the menu for Lent: The Jamaican Salmon Taco ($3.95) is made with a Jamaican jerk-rubbed salmon filet grilled in a banana leaf, along with grilled pineapple pico de gallo, shredded lettuce, habañero aioli and citrus pickled onions in a flour tortilla. The seasonal taco is available through March at all Mission Taco locations. served in a flour tortilla. In addition to Mission’s year-round tacos, Mango Hop-Anero Shrimp and Baja Fish tacos, the seasonal taco is available every day for a limited time through March.
Fancy a Thai twist to your Lenten meal? King & I’s take on a fish fry dish is the Mango Salmon – fried salmon topped with shredded green mango, red onion, carrots and cilantro and then dressed in a Thai-style vinaigrette. For an extra-special treat, try the King & I menu staple, the Seafood Hot Pot – shrimp, clams, scallops and more in a spicy, creamy broth.
SqWires Annex has Fish Fry Fridays featuring fried cod, baked cod and fried shrimp, whipped potatoes, sautéed green beans, hush puppies, creamy slaw, cookies and pie (some sides and dessert items may change weekly). Specials are available every Friday from 4:30 to 7 p.m. through March 22.
The Angad Arts Hotel has introduced three new fish specials for every Friday during Lent: New England Clam Chowder ($10), Classic Fish and Chips ($15) with coleslaw, and Blackened Trout ($28) with a grilled lemon caper sauce, herbed couscous and grilled asparagus spears. The specials are available, along with other seafood options on the regular menu, such as Curried Mussels ($16), Seafood Ravioli ($32), Creole Shrimp and Grits ($28) and Pan Seared Snapper ($28).
There’s a new seafood sandwich on the menu at Café la Vie at Le Meridien St. Louis Clayton. Through March 29, try the Crispy Fried Shrimp Po’boy ($18), which is served on a grilled baguette with a 16-spice remoulade sauce and a side of fries.
All four brewpub locations of Schlafly Beer are offering a Fish & Fries and a Catfish Po’Boy for Lent. The classic Fish & Fries comes with Hefeweizen-battered cod, fried golden brown and served on a bed of house-cut French fries with tartar sauce. The specials are available at Schlafly Tap Room, Schlafly Bottleworks, Schlafly Bankside and Schlafly Highland Square.
Speaking of Schlafly, its annual Stout & Oyster Festival returns next month with a new location. Dubbed the largest oyster festival in the Midwest, the event this year is moving from the Tap Room downtown to Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood.
The outdoor festival on March 8 and 9 will feature 50,000 fresh oysters from both coasts and 12 specialty stouts, as well as 20 seasoned oyster shuckers to shuck live all weekend.
In addition to the festival, Schlafly Bottleworks will be serving a limited menu inside the restaurant. The event, from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, will also feature live music and more.
A multicultural feast comes alive with the new Global Foods Market Cookbook. Featuring almost two dozen recipes from top local chefs, as well as St. Louis residents, the cookbook ($20) is now available for purchase inside Global Foods Market in Kirkwood. Notable chefs include Nick Bognar of Sado and Indo; Craig Rivard of Little Fox; Ben Poremba of Elia, Olio, Nixta, The Benevolent King, Deli Divine and Bar Moro; Munsok So of Kimchi Guys and more. Through the end of February, a portion of the proceeds from every book sold will benefit International Institute of St. Louis, an organization that helps incoming immigrants transition into the community.
Casa Don Alfonso at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis has a new executive chef. Eduardo Marquez, who has more than 15 years of culinary experience at Ritz-Carlton hotels around the world, is now leading the team at Casa Don Alfonso. Opened in 2021, the Southern Italian eatery honors the culinary heritage of the Campania region with a focus on seasonal ingredients.
