Among the honorees is Alexa Seda, who will receive this year’s Emerging Artist award. Seda, considered a rising star in the St. Louis arts scene, weaves together her passion for theatre and urban design. She brings fresh energy to both classic and original plays as a co-producer at EncoreSTL, a platform that creates opportunities for Black and Brown artists through theatre and youth programs. She also spearheaded the organization’s Cuéntame storytelling initiative, in collaboration with the Latinx Arts Network STL. With Seda’s background in public health specializing in urban design, her vision extends beyond the stage, such as her role in working to create equitable spaces through creative placemaking. Her “La Fiestecita de Encore Theatre” block party series bridged cultural divides with free music and dance, in celebration of the intersection of Latinx and Black communities. As a senior planner with the City of St. Louis, Seda’s focus is clear: use theatre and design to address the challenges faced by communities of color, building vibrant, inclusive spaces where everyone thrives.

GAZELLE: HOW DOES YOUR EXPERIENCE AS AN URBAN PLANNER INFORM THE ART YOU CREATE?

ALEXA SEDA: My work as an urban planner deeply informs my art. Concepts like housing, land-use policy and the built environment are woven into the fabric of my pieces. I find inspiration in classic works that explore these themes and create new works that spark conversations and even action. My planning experience translates seamlessly into producing theatre, allowing me to see the big picture, convene diverse groups and ultimately share complex urban narratives in an accessible and impactful way, leaving behind the technical jargon.

GAZELLE: HOW CAN THE ARTS BRING ABOUT INCLUSIVITY AND POSITIVELY IMPACT ALL MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY?

ALEXA SEDA: One of the greatest powers of art is its ability to bridge divides and connect people from different backgrounds. My urban planning background sheds light on issues like segregation and inequality, but art offers a powerful counterpoint, reminding us of our shared humanity and cultural richness. In my work with EncoreSTL, we strive to elevate diverse stories, champion inclusive casting and meet audiences where they are. Art nourishes the soul, fosters empathy and creates connections in a fragmented world. It pushes us, sometimes uncomfortably, to reach out, engage in dialogue and seek truths that pave the way for a more inclusive society.

GAZELLE: WHAT DOES THIS AWARD MEAN TO YOU?

ALEXA SEDA: As a young girl in Chicago, I felt pressured to choose between artistic expression and technical expertise. This award signifies, at least for me, that St. Louis has embraced the blending of these seemingly disparate pursuits. It validates my belief that a life infused with both art and technical skills can be vibrant and authentic. Accepting this award, I feel more comfortable in my own skin, empowered to celebrate non-traditional approaches to innovation and proud to be part of a wave of dynamic creative thinking.

In addition to Seda, this year’s Visionary Awards recipients are: Heather Beal-Himes (Outstanding Working Artist), Elizabeth Berges (Major Contributor to the Arts), Shawna Flanigan (Outstanding Teaching Artists), Meridith McKinley (Outstanding Arts Professional) and Luisa Otero-Prada (Community Impact Artist).

An awards ceremony and program, followed by a reception, begins at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 29, at the Sun Theater in Grand Center. For tickets and additional information, visit the Saint Louis Visionary Awards website.
