Going meatless for Lent? Beginning today, a number of St. Louis restaurants will have Lenten specials on the menu for dine-in, curbside or drive-thru service.
St. Louis fast-casual chain Lion’s Choice will have a limited-time special on its Crispy Cod Sandwich. The breaded cod filet, served on a buttery toasted sesame bun, is topped with a slice of melted Swiss cheese and creamy tartar sauce. On Ash Wednesday and every Friday through Lent, the Original Crispy Cod Sandwich is $4.79 ($7.99 for the Original Meal with fries and a drink). The King Crispy Cod Sandwich with two fish filets is $6.59 ($9.59 for the King Meal with large fries and a drink).
At Sqwires in Lafayette Square, Fish Fry Fridays start this week and continue every Friday through April 7. Two plate options, large ($17) and small ($13), are available from 4 to 7 p.m., and can be for dining in or carry out. The restaurant takes reservations and walk-ins are also welcome.
Beginning this Friday and on Fridays during Lent, Russell’s On Macklind will have Fried Cod ($14), served with buttermilk mashed potatoes, garlic green beans and lemon caper aioli, as well as a classic Fish & Chips ($14) featuring beer-battered cod, sea salt fries and caper dill pickle remoulade. Both specials are available for dine-in or to-go orders.
Every Friday during the Lenten season, the Fried White Fish Sandwich from KNEAD Bakehouse + Provisions on Hampton Avenue in South St. Louis will be on the menu. The sandwich comes with tartar sauce and lettuce on KNEAD’s signature sourdough brioche, along with a side of chips and a pickle.
Pioneer Bakery & Café in Kirkwood is serving up Shrimp Po Boy served on a hoagie bun with house-made remoulade, lettuce and tomato. There’s also a Shrimp Cilantro Lime Salad – the café’s signature salad with spring mix, romaine, grilled shrimp, roasted red peppers, tomatoes, pepitas, queso fresco, tortilla strips and lime cilantro vinaigrette. The specials start this Friday and continue on Fridays through Lent.
There’s a Tuna Fish Salad Sandwich special at the acclaimed Nathaniel Reid Bakery in Kirkwood. The sandwich ($7.75), on a flaky, house-made croissant, has albacore tuna, mayo, Dijon mustard, dill pickles, celery, hard-boiled eggs and red onion. The sandwich will be available on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent.
Yellowbelly in the Central West End will have a Friday special of Lobster Taquitos ($15). Served with poblano cream sauce and chihuahua cheese, the dish is a Lenten version of Yellowbelly’s popular Pabil Chicken Taquitos. The menu will also have a wide range of other seafood items, including Pan Seared Scallops, Seared Grouper, Grilled Salmon, a Warm Mini Lobster Roll and a Rum Battered Cod Sandwich.
For Ash Wednesday, Taqueria Morita will have Tempura Fish Tacos and a few more margarita options to coincide with National Margarita Day, also on Feb. 22. The featured specials continue Wednesdays through Saturdays until March 4, the last day of Taqueria Morita’s pop-up at Winslow’s Table in University City. Expanded MargMorita options include the Classic, Mezcal-Rita and Spicy. Taqueria Morita will resume operations at its garden-side patio at Vicia this spring starting April 12.
As for Winslow’s Table, the popular meeting spot on Delmar Boulevard is bringing back its Fried Fish Sandwich for Lent. The sandwich, available for lunch during fish-fry season, features ramp tartar sauce, American cheese and malt vinegar powder on brioche.
In Belleville, Eckert’s Country Restaurant has a Fish Fry Meal for four ($38) for curbside pickup beginning Ash Wednesday and continuing every Friday through April 2. The meal includes 1 ½ pounds of fried cod, mac ‘n cheese and creamy coleslaw. The same meal will be available for dining in at the restaurant starting March 1.
