Despite the 34-degree weather and a winter storm warning from the National Weather Service, women and men of all ages came together to march for equality on Saturday, Jan. 19.
The main event began at 10 a.m., when participants started in front of Union Station and marched along Market Street. After the speakers, including Katie RhoadesKim GardnerLeon BraxtonTara MuellerErica WilliamsMichelle RobinsonTeona McGhaw-BoureRobert DillardKali AssataAmy Hunter and Dana Kelly, and a musical performance by The Knuckles, people in the crowd were welcome to explore the action fair, where nonprofits set up tables along the street.
The two main organizers of the march this year were Lauren Kohn Davis and Heather Fleming, who wanted to draw attention to local nonprofits and provide resources for women to help enact change. Organizations that participated in the action fair included A Red Circle, The Women’s Safe House and the Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Program, among others.
“The purpose of the St. Louis march is to show up for all women to create change. To stand in solidarity with our sisters of all faiths, colors, creeds, sexualities, etc. To bring awareness to the structures in place that keep us and them marginalized, and to begin to connect people with resources to break down those barriers,” Davis said.
