Calling all theatre and arts aficionados! The two-day theatre-centric whirlwind that is the Grand Center Theatre Crawl is back for its seventh year. The event on June 28 and 29, is free and open to the public. and features more than 2 dozen professional theatre companies from across the St. Louis area showcasing their work in numerous venues throughout Grand Center.
“Audience members can expect to see firsthand the breadth, richness and diversity of work done locally,” said event coordinator Peggy Holly. “In each of three time slots on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening, they can see up to six different shows for a total of 18—and that’s still not all of the dozens of performances.”
The artists, from groups such as Stray Dog Theatre, Shakespeare Festival St. Louis, The Rep, Gateway Opera, West End Players Guild and more, will be performing just about anywhere—in theaters, restaurants, schools, churches, lobbies, etc. The performers will stage short, 15-minute samples of their work every 30 minutes beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 28, and beginning at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 29. The annual Salute to Women in Leadership presented by the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis takes place on Saturday, June 15, at the Marriott St. Louis Grand. This year, the annual awards ceremony is recognizing a trio of longtime artists as Lifetime Achievement honorees, including St. Louis-born actress, activist, and author Jenifer Lewis of ABC’s “Black-ish,” actress and author Bern Nadette Stanis of the classic TV sitcom, “Good Times,” and singer-songwriter Regina Belle. Other award recipients are: Betty Thompson, Connie Wilson, Frances Levine, Marsha Mockabee, Maureen Brinkley, Miranda Jones, Molly Hyland, Nancy Kranzberg, Paula E.W. Carey-Moore, Robin Boyce, Rose Mary Johnson, Suzy Stone and Yaphett El-Amin. The event begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and a program, and entertainment by Regina Belle. Look for the new Lift for Life Academy Elementary School to open in late August. An extension of the innovative Lift for Life Academy charter school, the new elementary school building is adjacent to the current campus in Soulard. The school is currently accepting applications for kindergarten, first- and second-grade students, as part of its long-range plan to be a K-12 alternative for families in St. Louis City. Lift for Life Academy currently serves approximately 600 students and provides them with programs and services within a private-school atmosphere at no cost to students and their families. The school boasts a 90-percent graduation rate, with at least 80 percent of students pursuing college, technical school or the military following commencement. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new school is planned for Aug. 29.
