Trish Set: Stranger Than Fiction Goes Steampunk, City Winery Arrives in St. Louis & More!

Prepare for plenty of eye candy at this year’s Stranger Than Fiction event at the St. Louis Public Library (SLPL).

Themed “The Art of Innovation,” SLPL’s signature fundraiser at Central Library promises to transport attendees back to the 19th century and the Industrial Revolution. Guests are encouraged to dress in steampunk attire – a mix of Victorian fashion, science fiction and post-apocalyptic elements.

Proceeds from the Saturday, June 4, event will support technology programming, equipment and services at SLPL. Square co-founder and Invisibly founder Jim McKelvey is the event’s honorary chair; Cabanne Howard, Al Mitchell and Ted Wight are serving as co-chairs.

Broadway star Heather Headley will headline The Sheldon’s 2022 gala this spring.

The event on Saturday, April 2, is in celebration of philanthropists Wilfred and Ann Lee Konneker and the re-opening of The Sheldon’s event space, now named the Konneker Room. The late Wilfred and Ann Lee Konneker were longtime supporters whose $3 million bequest is the largest ever individual gift to The Sheldon.

The evening will include cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, dinner, and conclude with the concert featuring Headley, the Tony and Grammy award-winning artist who starred in Broadway’s “The Lion King,” Aida,” and “The Color Purple,” and appears in the Netflix drama, “Sweet Magnolias.”

Concert-only tickets will be available beginning Feb. 11. For more information, visit the 2022 Gala’s official event page.

Next month’s Metro Theater Company production of “Last Stop on Market Street” tells the story of CJ, a young boy who takes a bus ride to a soup kitchen with his Nana (played by jazz great Denise Thimes) and develops a new understanding of respect, thankfulness and giving back.

In this spirit, Metro is partnering with Operation Food Search for a food drive during the show’s run, Feb. 6 to 27, at the Grandel Theatre. Audience members are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items and place them in the marked blue barrels.

In addition to live, in-person performances at The Grandel, “Last Stop on Market Street” will also have a virtual streaming option available beginning Feb. 11. For tickets and more information, visit metroplays.org.

City Winery, the upscale dining and live entertainment venue, will open its first St. Louis location at City Foundry STL, next to the Food Hall.

In addition to food and wine, City Winery, which also has locations in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York City and Washington, D.C., offers intimate concert space, private event spaces, a pizza bar, coffee roasting station and an on-site winery. The Foundry location will have a 70-seat restaurant, as well as additional outdoor seating, and a performance venue than can accommodate 175 people. The event space can hold up to 300 people. Opening date is slated for late summer.

Jetsetters, rejoice! There’s some terrific news out of the Metro East: MidAmerica St. Louis Airport is reporting a new record high for passenger traffic at the airport.

Allegiant planes at MidAmerica St. Louis Airport

In 2021, despite the ongoing COVID pandemic, passenger traffic increased to a total of 320,000 travelers, exceeding pre-pandemic 2019 numbers by 3.4%. Officials tout MidAmerica’s affordability, location and its strong partnership with Allegiant Air as among the reasons for the growth of the airport, located next to Scott Air Force Base.

Allegiant, a low-cost carrier, offers flights from MidAmerica to Charleston, Daytona Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix/Mesa and Savannah, among other destinations.
