It’s Opening Weekend for the St. Louis Black Repertory Company’s 47th season and the world premiere of the highly anticipated historical drama, “Hold On!”
Joining the festivities all weekend long will be British playwright and screenwriter Paul Webb, whose script for “Hold On!” inspired the 2014 award-winning film, “Selma.” The story portrays the conflict between two extraordinary men – Martin Luther King, Jr. and Lyndon B. Johnson – leading up to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Best known as the screenwriter for “Selma,” Webb’s other works include “Four Knights in Knaresborough” about the assassination of Thomas Becket and the BET mini-series, “Madiba,” on the life of Nelson Mandela.
Webb will appear at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11, for a preview performance of “Hold On!” followed by a post-show discussion. He will also be in attendance for Opening Night on Friday, Jan. 12, at 8 p.m. A post-show reception and meet-and-greet follows Friday night’s performance. On Sunday, Jan. 14, Webb will participate in a 2 p.m. pre-show discussion before the matinee performance at 3 p.m.
Preview performances are at 7 p.m. on Jan. 10 and 11. “Hold On!” opens Jan. 12 and runs through Jan. 28.
All shows will be held at the Edison Theatre on the campus of Washington University.
The Black Rep’s production of “Hold On!” is directed by founder and producing director Ron Himes.
