It’s history in the making at the Missouri Historical Society: An inaugural fundraising event combining history and fashion, “Threads: History Never Looked So Haute,” is planned for spring 2019 with a runway show that promises to enthrall and excite the most stylish of St. Louisans. The April 13, 2019 event will feature a group of local designers, each paired with an item from the museum’s clothing and textiles collection of more than 18,000 pieces.
Senior curator Shannon Meyer tells Gazelle that participating designers were given images of 40 pre-selected artifacts from the collection and asked to choose an inspiration piece.
“The selections included things like a circa-1900 fireman’s parade shirt, a 1950s prom dress, a late 18th-century ladies’ pocket watch and a St. Louis city flag,” Meyer noted.

Safe Connections, one of St. Louis’ longest-serving organizations that works to prevent and end domestic and sexual violence, is holding its Lotus Ball on Friday, Nov. 9, at the Missouri Athletic Club downtown. Proceeds from the event will support Safe Connections and its efforts to provide counseling and 24-hour crisis care for survivors, as well as violence prevention program, all available free of charge to those who need it. Don’t forget: The Chamber Music Society of St. Louis has rescheduled its 10th Anniversary Gala honoring conductor Leonard Slatkin. The “Notes from Hollywood—The Sequel” fundraiser, featuring Slatkin’s salute to Tinseltown film composers, was postponed following Slatkin’s heart bypass surgery in May. A few VIP packages, which include valet parking, pre-concert cocktails, preferred concert seating, a post-concert dinner, and a copy of Slatkin’s book “Leading Tones,” are still available.
