The International Photography Hall of Fame (IPHF) has announced its slate of inductees for 2022, with an induction and awards ceremony to take place in St. Louis next month.
This year’s honorees include photographers or photography industry visionaries who demonstrate artistry, passion and revolution of the past and present art and science of photography. They are: Edward Burtynsky, Chester Higgins, Graciela Iturbide, Helen Levitt, Danny Lyon and Sarah Moon.
Burtynsky’s images depict global industrial landscapes spanning four decades, representing his dedication to bear witness to the impact of humans on the planet. His photographs are included in the collections of more than 60 museums around the world.
Higgins, whose years attending Tuskegee University in the 1960s inspired him to pursue a career in photography, is known for documenting the African American experiences unfolding around him. In addition to his work as a New York Times photographer, his images have also been featured in Life, Time, Newsweek, Ebony and Essence, among other publications.
Iturbide, who hails from Mexico, has won numerous top awards in photography, including the W. Eugene Smith Prize, the Grand Prize of the Month of Photography in Paris, the Grand Prize of Hokkaido, Japan, and the Prize of the City from Arles, France. In 2008, her work was awarded the Hasselblad Foundation Award, considered the highest recognition in the world of photography.
Levitt’s body of work showcases street scenes in New York City, where she took her camera to the poorer neighborhoods like Spanish Harlem and the Lower East Side. Her signature black-and-white images of urban life, especially of children playing in the streets has been described as “anti-journalistic” by renowned photographer Walker Evans, a contemporary of Levitt’s with whom she helped make prints for his famous show, “American Photographs,” in 1938.
Photojournalist, writer and filmmaker Lyon has his photographs in museums and collections around the world. His retrospective, “Message to the Future,” was shown in New York City and San Francisco in 2016 and 2017. This year, the Albuquerque Museum of Art will present his major exhibition, “Danny Lyon – Journey West.”
Moon, who came to prominence in the 1970s, is known for her elegant, ethereal images. A fashion photographer and filmmaker since 1968, her work has been published in Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Life and more. She won the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award for Applied Photography in 1985 and the Grand Prix National de la Photographie in 1995.
All honorees (except for the late Helen Levitt) will be in attendance for the induction and award presentation on Friday, Nov. 4, at the .ZACK in Grand Center.
In addition, photographer, visual designer and brand advertiser Kyle Huber, will receive the Visionary Award; and the Association of International Photography Art Dealers, a collective voice for fine-art photography dealers, will receive the Leadership Award.
An exhibition featuring the work of the 2022 inductees will open on Saturday, Nov. 5 and will run through Feb. 11, 2023 at the International Hall of Fame and Museum.
