Fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld died on Feb. 19 in Paris, France. He was beyond influential and changed the world of fashion as we know it. To honor him, here are ten things to know.
1) He moved from Germany to Paris in 1952.
2) He scored his first major position as Pierre Balmain’s assistant in 1955, after winning a design contest for a wool coat.
3) When the Chanel brand was dying off and becoming less popular in 1980s fashion, he brought it back into the mainstream.
4) He co-owned a book publishing company called Lagerfeld. Steidl. Druckerei. Verlag. aka L.S.D.
5) He co-wrote a book with his physician about how he lost 93 pounds, called “The Karl Lagerfeld Diet.”
6) As he aged, he seemed to have always worn leather gloves in every photo.
7) He has created costumes for performances at the La Scala in Milan, the Florence opera house and the Monte Carlo Ballet.
8) He designed two suites in the Hotel De Crillon and a six-star, 290-room hotel in Macau.
9) His birth year has never actually been confirmed. Most people think it’s 1933, he once said 1935, and some think it’s 1938.
10) He was very skilled in photography, and photographed most of Chanel’s ads after 1987.
