Commemorate Dia de Los Muertos this Weekend at History Museum

A quarter-mile-long procession through Forest Park, art displays, Spanish storytelling and souvenir printmaking to honor loved ones are just some of the highlights during this weekend’s Dia de Los Muertos Festival at the Missouri History Museum.

Two full days of activities are planned for the annual Dia de los Muertos Festival and Celebration of Latinx Culture at the museum on Saturday, Nov. 5, and Sunday, Nov. 6.

Free, family friendly activities take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Beautifully decorated family altars representing a variety of Latin American cultural traditions will be on display, as well as artwork from local artists. Also featured are live music and dance performances, make-and-take crafts such as skull masks and picture frames, and face- and arm-painting. Outdoor food and drink vendors will also be on site.

The procession through Forest Park takes place on Saturday, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 5

11am to 7pm | Altar viewing
11am to 7pm | Art display
11am to 7pm | Outdoor food and drink vendors
11am to 5pm | Make-and-take crafts
Noon to 4pm | Face or arm painting (kids free, adult tickets are $12)
Noon to 4pm | Souvenir printmaking to celebrate loved ones
1pm | Cuentos en el museo (Spanish storytelling)
1 to 4 pm | Outdoor music by Inti Llajta and DJ Eric
2pm and 4pm | Dance performances by Our Lady of Guadalupe Dancers
5:30pm | Procession begins (.25-mile walk through Forest Park)

11am to 5pm | Make-and-take crafts including calavera (skull) masks and family photo frames
Noon to 12:30pm | The Basics of Día de los Muertos presentation with folklorist Cynthia L. Vidaurri (Lee Auditorium)

Noon to 4pm | Souvenir printmaking to celebrate loved ones

1 to 2pm | Outdoor live music by Mariachi Nuevo Azteca

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), the annual holiday commemorated throughout Mexico and around the world in other Hispanic cultures, is in remembrance of loves ones who have died.

The Missouri History Museum’s annual Día de los Muertos Festival is a colorful, high-spirited celebration that shares the rich history and traditions of the holiday, as well as the Hispanic/Latinx culture, by highlighting contributions made by Hispanic artists, musicians, dancers, artisans and chefs.
