Lupita Nyong’o, international filmmaker and actress known for her Academy Award-winning role as Patsey in “12 Years a Slave,” and as Nakia in “Black Panther,” recently added author to her list of accomplishments.
In October, she published the children’s book, “Sulwe,” about a young girl of the same name, who is struggling with self-esteem because of her dark skin tone. The heartwarming story is meant to inspire children to embrace their uniqueness, and help them realize that true beauty comes from within.

Nyong’o, raised in Kenya, has experienced firsthand how colorism rears its ugly head in Latin communities and even on the continent.
“Throughout the world, even in Kenya, even today, there is a popular sentiment that lighter is brighter,” she explained.
“With ‘Sulwe,’ I wanted to give dark skin permission to exist in the world of dreams and imagination, where possibilities and potential really grow,” she said.
