(Editors Note: On Aug. 18, The Sheldon announced that the concert has been cancelled due to “an unforeseen scheduling conflict.” Ticket holders will be contacted and automatically refunded.)
One of the most anticipated concert events in St. Louis is the two-day Music at the Intersection festival that will bring together more than 50 local, regional and national acts to Grand Center Sept. 10 and 11.
But the celebration will begin one day prior, on Sept. 9, with a “pre-party” concert at The Sheldon in honor of renowned singer-songwriter Angela Winbush, who will be recognized with the St. Louis Legends award during the festival.
Angela Winbush, who was born and raised in St. Louis, arrived on the national R&B in the early ‘80s as one half of the chart-topping duo, Rene & Angela; and with her solo hits, including “I’ve Learned to Respect (The Power of Love),” “Angel,” “Lay Your Troubles Down” and “Treat U Rite.” She’s also worked and as producer for major artists such as Janet Jackson, Stephanie Mills, The Isley Brothers, Sheena Easton and Lalah Hathaway.
The “It’s the Real Thing” concert on Friday, Sept. 9, at The Sheldon will feature fellow St. Louis native, singer Coco Soul, as well as a lineup of some of the area’s brightest performers, who will pay musical tribute to Winbush and her legacy.
Tickets to the concert go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 15, online via TheSheldon.org or by calling Metrotix (314) 534-1111.
On the following evening, Sept. 10, Winbush will receive the St. Louis Legends award, given to impactful, homegrown artists who have left an undeniable imprint on the American songbook. The ceremony will take place during the Music at the Intersection festival on the Washington Avenue main stage prior to a performance by headline Erykah Badu.
