The St. Louis Black Repertory Company recently hosted its Sophisticated Ladies luncheon at 18 Rails at City Foundry STL.
The Sophisticated Ladies giving initiative supports the work of The Black Rep and Black women playwrights. Each year, the group commits to underwriting a mainstage performance written by a woman of color. This season, the Sophisticated Ladies is presenting “Wedding Band” by Alice Childress, March 13 to 31 at the Berges Theatre at COCA.
The drama, set in the deep South at the end of World War I during the flu epidemic, centers around interracial love, addressing prejudice and ignorance in early 20th-century America.
Last month’s luncheon, which was co-chaired by Bonnie Gipson, Lee Haynes and Denise Thimes, featured a presentation on Alice Childress by African diaspora theatre professor and author Kathy Perkins.
