There was no shortage of smiling faces for this week’s Opening Night festivities at The Muny, which ushered in its first live performance on the legendary stage since the end of the 2019 season.

The Muny opened its 103rd season July 26 with “Smokey Joe’s Café,” a musical walk down memory lane to the songs of Leiber and Stoller. Jukebox hits such as “Jailhouse Rock,” “Love Potion No. 9” and “Yakety Yak” kept the crowd of approximately 6,000 theatergoers snapping their fingers and tapping their toes to the music all evening long.
Prior to the show, artistic director and executive producer Mike Isaacson welcomed the audience back with happiness and gratitude for the new season, 714 days since a live show was held on the Muny stage in Forest Park due to the pandemic. Isaacson also announced the creation of the Denny Reagan Endowed Fund, named after the longtime president and CEO who will be retiring in December. Donations to the fund will be used to support all areas of The Muny operation.
“Smokey Joe’s Café” runs through Sunday, Aug. 1. The season continues with “The Sound of Music” Aug. 3 to 9. For more information, visit The Muny website.
