WHAT: MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI

“Mighty Mississippi,” a 6,000-square-foot special exhibit that explores the rich heritage of the famous river displays more than 200 artifacts – many dating back 1,000 years –to tell the story of survival along one of the world’s greatest watersheds, from its days as the largest and most influential American Indian centers of the Mississippian period; to the vast European and Indian fur trade networks that forever changed the continent; to the steamboats, factories and immigration of the Industrial Age. Among the highlights: an earthenware salt pan circa 1000-1700 found in Kimmswick, Missouri, an 1830s cannon used by the American Fur Company and the pilothouse from the storied Golden Eagle steamboat. free; mohistory.org

 

WHAT: MOJADA: A MEDEA IN LOS ANGELES

WHERE: Repertory Theatre of St. Louis

Euripides’ fifth century Greek tragedy, Medea, is retold by playwright Luis Alfaro through the experiences and sacrifices of modern-day immigrants. In this retelling, Mexican immigrants Jason and Medea are trying to make it in Los Angeles with their young son. But the ill-fated couple is often at odds, struggling between assimilation and tradition, leading them down a very dark and dangerous path. $20-94.50 repstl.org

WHAT: SUMMER: THE DONNA SUMMER MUSICAL

WHEN: Various times, Jan. 15 to 26

WHERE: Fox Theatre

The girl from Boston with a voice from heaven, former gospel choir girl Donna Summer shot through the stars to become a dance-floor diva and a voice of a generation with worldwide hits such as “Hot Stuff,” “She Works Hard for the Money” and “Last Dance.” The much-anticipated production features more than 20 of Summer’s classic hits, plus dazzling costumes, choreography and overall eye candy! $24-89 fabulousfox.com 

 

WHAT: THE LOOP ICE CARNIVAL

WHEN: Noon to 6 p.m., Jan. 18 to 19

WHERE: The Delmar Loop

Enjoy winter-themed, family-friendly activities throughout The Delmar Loop during The Loop Ice Carnival. Find carnival rides and participate in frozen turkey bowling and other games, as well as see live ice-sculpting demonstrations as you stroll along Delmar Boulevard. Playful, decorative photo stands by artist Bill Christman and winter-themed characters such as penguins will also be around for fun photo opportunities.
