What started off as a pizza concept at the height of the pandemic now has its own brick-and-mortar home.

Pizza Champ opened this week in downtown Maplewood as a walk-up restaurant with a drive-through window. Because it shares space with the upcoming expansion of Side Project Brewing at the corner of Lyle Avenue and Manchester Road, patio seating will be available later in the year for both Pizza Champ and brewery guests.

Pizza Champ was conceived by restaurant industry veterans Chris Kelling and Adam Altnether, who also own Elmwood in Maplewood, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people were opting for carryout meals instead of dining in.

The duo has previously worked at fine-dining restaurants like Niche and The Restaurant at Meadowood and more. Kelling will run front-of-the-house operations, while Altnether will serve as chef.

Pizza Champ is known for its 18-inch pies baked in a traditional brick-lined pizza oven. Offerings include a selection of “red” and “white” pies, including Grilled Kale & Ricotta, Triple Pepperoni and When in Rome, as well as specialty pizzas such as Taco and Buffalo Fried Chicken. Salads, sandwiches, wings and dessert are also on the menu.

Pizza Champ, located at 2657 Lyle Ave., is open from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 2 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Orders may also be placed in advance online.
