(Editor’s Note: Since its initial announcement that it was closing its Webster Groves storefront in Dec. 23, Serendipity owner Beckie Jacobs has sent word the shop will now close at the end of the day on Sunday, Dec. 19, due to inventory. Serendipity’s new location in The Grove is scheduled to open in spring 2022.)
A longtime go-to destination for a sweet treat in Webster Groves is closing its doors later this month, but will soon reopen with a larger storefront in The Grove neighborhood.
For 18 years, Serendipity Homemade Ice Cream has been a welcome spot along Big Bend Boulevard in Webster’s Old Orchard district, but owner Beckie Jacobs says a landlord dispute forced her decision to close.
“This is so bittersweet for me. After 18 beloved years in Webster Groves, my customers have truly become family,” Jacobs said. “Unfortunately, I’ve been unable to come to an agreement with my landlord, who terminated my lease, and I’ve been unsuccessful in finding a suitable, alternative location in Webster at this time.”
Fortunately for Serendipity fans, a new, larger location is nearing completion in The Grove, with an expected opening date in spring 2022.
“(The) new location in The Grove has been in the works for quite some time and we’ve got some super cool changes in store for our guests with our new city location,” Jacobs said.
Expect a larger dining area, an expanded menu and increased hours of operation at the new Grove location on 4400 Manchester Road, across from Urban Chestnut Brewing Company.
The shop’s annual tradition of celebrating the annual “Ice Cream for Breakfast” day on Feb. 5 will be held at two host locations next year: Parkmoor Drive-In in Webster Groves and Sliced Pint on Washington Avenue. The event is from 8 to 11 a.m.
Other planned pop-ups will be posted on Serendipity’s website.
The original Webster Groves location, opened in 2003, closes on Dec. 23.
