Vibrating with vim and vigor, Viva Magenta, Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2023, is a shade rooted in nature. A descendant of the red family, the color expresses strength, as well as joyous and optimistic celebration – perfect for taking on the new year.
Pantone calls its new animated red a color that “revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying and a boundary-less shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement.”
Pantone Viva Magenta 18-1750 is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious, strongest and brightest dyes belonging to the natural dye family, according to Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman.
“Rooted in the primordial, Pantone 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter,” Eiseman said. “Invoking the forces of nature, Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”
The Pantone Color Institute forecasts global color trends that help designers and brands harness the power of color. It introduced its first-ever Color of the Year, Cerulean, in 1999.
