Happenings: Virtual Arts Experiences for the Holidays

 

Oh, the weather outside may be frightful, but St. Louis theater groups, dance companies and museums have plans to keep you safe and warm this holiday season. Here’s a sampling of virtual experiences you can enjoy from the comfort of home:

WHAT: HALL OF FAME INDUCTION AND AWARDS EXHIBITION

WHERE: International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum

Photographic masterworks, including some of the world’s most iconic historical and pop culture images, are currently on display at the museum as part of the 2020 Hall of Fame Induction and Awards exhibition. Among this year’s honorees are legendary rock music photographer Henry Diltz, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Alfred Eisenstaedt, most known for “V-J Day in Times Square,” who was honored posthumously. WHAT: OPERA THEATRE HOLIDAY CONCERT

Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’ virtual winter concert is filled with the joys of the season: beautiful backdrops, singers in cozy sweaters, beloved carols, holiday songs and even a few opera numbers, and, of course, “snow!” The concert, filmed at the Sally S. Levy Opera Center, stars soprano Angel Riley, mezzo-soprano Stephanie Sanchez, tenor Ryan Johnson, baritone Benjamin Taylor, bass Alex Rosen and pianist Mauro Ronca.

WHAT: COOKING, CAROLS AND COCKTAILS

WHERE: Repertory Theatre of St. Louis

Food, music and community come together in “Cooking, Carols and Cocktails,” The Rep’s web series featuring appearances by local chefs and restaurateurs, as well as opportunities to take a cooking class, create complementary cocktails and enjoy music from St. Louis artists. Participating restaurants include Turn, Barcelona Tapas, Cathy’s Kitchen and Perfectly Pastry. Fresh Heir, Joe Mancuso, Paige Alyssa and Tonina are among the musicians scheduled to perform.

WHAT: NUTCRACKER EXTRAVAGANZA

WHERE: Saint Louis Ballet

A new, fully produced program of one of St. Louis’ enduring holiday traditions is now available to stream from Saint Louis Ballet. The company presents a new performance of “Land of the Sweets,” as well as popular scenes from previous “Nutcracker” performances by Saint Louis Ballet dancers. Also on tap are behind-the-scenes interviews and other surprises, all from the comfort of your own home! VIP dining packages, featuring a catered meal, surprise treats and dancer visits, are also available for an additional charge.

WHAT: MUNY HOLIDAY MAGIC

The newly announced four-day holiday video series brings theater fans performances from Muny family across the country, including Broadway’s Ken Page, Jason Gotay, Mamie Parris and Nasia Thomas, as well as from 2020 Summer Variety Hour Live! favorites and The Muny Kids and Teens. The series features holiday song medleys, creative numbers and even a Christmas Eve reading of “The Night Before Christmas,” and will be available through The Muny’s social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
